System
The MDRail system is divded into three distinct corridors: Southern Maryland (SOMD), Patuxent River (PAX River), and Captol Bypass.
The Southern Maryland (SOMD) Corridor is made up track spanning approximately 45 route miles from the interchange with the Northeast Corridor (NEC) at Bowie, MD south to Morgantown, MD on the banks of the Potomac. Major facilities along this route include an interchange yard at Bowie, MD, an interchange to the Patuxent River (PAX River) Corridor at Brandywine, MD and a junction to the Capitol Bypass corridor at White Plains, MD. This corridor also includes the Luarel Connector which provides a bypass to the NEC at Bowie and a connection to CSX freight lines in Laurel, MD; as well as, the Capitol Extension which parallel's the NEC int o Washington, DC and provides access to Benning Yard and the Shephard Branch serving local customers.
The Patuxent River (PAX River) Corridor is made up of track spanning approximately 27 route miles from the interchange with the SOMD Corridor at Brandywine, MD southeast to Mechanicsville, MD.
The Capitol Bypass Corridor is made up track spanning approximately 36 route miles from the junction with the SOMD Corridor at White Plains, MD west to the Junction with CSX Transportation at Arkendale, VA. The Capitol Bypass Corridor was established to provide an alternative route for moving HazMat materials by rail around Washington, DC. Major facilities along this route include the junction with the SOMD Corridor at White Plains, MD, the MDRail corporate facility and MDRailshops maintenance facility at White Plains, MD, the junction to the Navy Secondary at Bumpy Oak, MD and the interchange with CSX Transportation at Arkendale, VA.
